The first benefit of membership is a regular newsletter and commentary sent to you by e-mail. Jon writes his personal view of the wine world, and aims to supply you with interesting snippets and information although he admits that an occasional tirade or prejudice may elbow its way in now and again.

There are also regular free wine tastings, usually held in a local hotel. These are not in any way formal or intimidating, we just put out the wines we have selected, give you a glass and let you work your own way around. We are there to talk about the wines (or anything else) but we do not make a formal presentation or try to preach about them, we prefer to let the wines speak for themselves.

Most times we arrange an optional fixed price meal in the hotel afterwards to make the whole evening more special, and usually most people do stay for the meal which makes a very pleasant social event. The wines are offered at a special discount for orders placed on the night.

We also put on regular promotions for Tasting Club members offering special deals or discounts, details of these in the newsletters.

Italian Tasting

There is still just time if you have not already done so to add your name to the list for our tasting of Italian wines at the Coquetvale Hotel at Rothbury at 7pm on Wednesday 1st October. The tasting is free and there will be a good range of wines to try, followed by the option of signing up for a fixed price meal in the Coquetvale’s Italia + restaurant at £24 per head for four courses including wine. Just ring Lindsey or Jane in the shop on 01669 620965 if you want to come.

Luigi Bosca

A friend of mine went on holiday to South America recently and came back raving about waterfalls, Machu Pichu and this fantastic Argentinean wine he had found from a producer called Luigi Bosca. “Oh yes” I was able to say “We sell his wine in Rothbury”.
Bosca has the distinction of producing the most expensive Argentinean wine currently selling in the UK (available at about £65 I understand) but we sell his more sensibly priced Pinot Noir Reserva and Malbec Reserve, both on our shelves at £8.65 and well worth every penny.

Cederberg

Another great wine lurking in Rothbury is from the South African Cederberg winery. Unlike many new world wineries this is a long established business. The current winemaker David Nieuwouldt is the fifth generation to work on the farm which began winemaking in 1973. His wine recently won a gold medal and was the International Trophy Winner at a prestigious Decanter tasting. We have his Cederberg 5 Generations Chenin Blanc at £16.29 a very big, concentrated wine with wonderfully complex flavours, worth treating yourself to.

New Zealand

Another wine which won a medal at the same Decanter tasting was the Seifried Estate Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The judges described it as “Gentle, delicate fruit on the nose. Lime and gooseberry flavours with grass. Fresh.” I describe it as a corking good glug and a snip at £9.38

Northumberland Now

Many of you have been nice enough to say good things about the Northumberland Gazettes new wine column, written by Yours Truly. It pops up once a fortnight in the Northumberland Now section alongside yummy recipes and a beer column. The only downside is a mugshot of me – at least I spare you that in e-mail.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the tasting on Wednesday, the rest of you do pop in to the shop, we have quite a few new lines with more to come.

In the meantime, keep on enjoying your wines.

Jon
